We all know that life can truly change in the blink of an eye. We all know what is important to us in life such as family, children, your marriage, your friends, financial stability and the list goes on and on.
These things are important but you must remember that YOU are also in this equation. I am a prime example of this and why Adventure has become such a important part of my life.
Life can change so very very rapidly and it did in my life. I had a nagging backache that was persistent over the course of a month and finally decided to go see the doctor. The last thing that you expect to hear from your Doctor is that you have stage 4 stomach cancer and that you have a tumor the size of a tangerine in your stomach.
At that moment Everything changed in my life, what was to come and leading into what is to come in my future.
During the course of a three year battle with Cancer you find what is important and the things that are no longer such, and you throw them away like yesterdays trash.
You find the love of a Father who retires and cares for you for 3 years. Who drives you to every appointment, comes and visits you everyday in the hospital, cleans up the shit and vomit that has come form every part of your body and who goes and gets you a cherry Slurpee at 3 o’clock in the morning because that is the only thing that makes you feel better.
You find the most wonderful women in the world who a few months into a relationship could have run fast and far away because she didn’t sign up for this. Who would work six days in Mexico and then fly to Los Angeles and sleep in the uncomfortable chair next to my bed until she had to return back for work and do it over and over again. Who brought so much Love and happiness to me during that terrible time of my life. Who has given me two sons who I am so very proud of and an amazing family who have given me so much even when they don’t have to give. Luckily I made her my wife and will always be thankful to her for the true Meaning of Love and Life.
Lifelong friends and family members who you were always there for who never once came and visited or if they did, they stayed for 10 minutes. It made me reorganize my priorities and what is important to me. It has made my true friendships stronger and the others have been removed from the equation.
Live Everyday as an Adventure. Take that trip to Africa that you have always wanted, Learn a foreign language, take a class, learn to ride a motorcycle or go see that Broadway play you always wanted to even if it is at that small Theater company down the street. What is important is that you do it for you health and sanity..
Adventure can but it doesn’t have to be expensive. It can be as easy as loading the car up with blankets and food and driving out to the desert to see a meteor shower or to see the cave drawings in Joshua Tree. Just make the effort and make your life an Adventure. I promise you will be much happier.
